 | It's A Shore Thing on the North Shore! |
 |
|

The communities of Winnetka, Kenilworth, Wilmette, Glencoe, and Northfield constitute the five "feeder suburbs" for New Trier High School. This part of Chicago's North Shore is highly sought after due to its proximity to the lake, proximity to the city of Chicago, and a tradition and history of excellence in education. Winnetka, Kenilworth, Wilmette, and Glencoe all have lakefront properties, public parks, and beaches. All are approximately 30-45 minutes on the train to downtown Chicago. Northfield, while not on the lake, offers a tranquil, more "country-like" feel with many large, wooded lots.
Schools
Schools seem to be the driving force behind the moves of many of the residents living in these communities. There are many excellent school districts in the surrounding communities; however, the long history of academic excellence is a big draw for many. New Trier High School is nationally recognized as one of the finest public high schools in the country.
This is an area that places a premium on education and is very family centric. The focus is on family, community, and schools. As a result, there is great pride in the schools of the area. Not only is New Trier a source of pride, so are the grade schools and junior high schools that feed into New Trier. Depending on the village, the schools are set up slightly differently. Wilmette and Winnetka have small neighborhood grade schools that later merge into larger middle and junior high schools. Kenilworth has a single school (grades K-8). Glencoe and Northfield have community wide schools. Avoca School encompasses parts of Wilmette, Winnetka, Northfield, and Glenview. It is composed of two schools; a grade school (grades K-5) and a junior high (grades 6-8). Each system appears to work well for the particular dynamics of each community.

For high school, all students in New Trier Township are able to attend New Trier High School (District 203). New Trier is divided into two campuses. The West Campus, located in Northfield, is home to all freshman students. This is a wonderful arrangement, as it is the first time students from all six junior high schools come together. The freshman campus provides a great opportunity for a large class of 1000 students to get to know each other without the influence of the older grades. The East Campus is the original campus established in 1901. The East Campus, located in Winnetka, accommodates sophomores, juniors, and seniors. New Trier is known for its academic excellence in addition to its award winning fine arts program and excellent athletic programs.

Parks and Recreation
Our lakefront setting allows for cool summer breezes and somewhat milder winter temperatures compared to the western suburbs. The lake also allows for wonderful park district and recreational opportunities ranging from sailing, swimming, dog beaches, and more.
Village Life
The downtown areas of each village still try to maintain a small-town "Mayberry" feel with few national chains and many smaller independent merchants. The boutiques and specialty stores cater to the needs and wants of all ages in each community.

Housing
Property values are fairly consistent from one community to the next. Each has some "affordable" or "entry-level" housing and high-end luxury houses. The architecture is somewhat diverse, including the favored colonial, Georgian, Tudor, and Victorian styles. In recent years, much of our older and smaller housing stock has been replaced to make way for "new" traditional houses with large kitchen-family rooms. There are also condominium and townhouse options. Many of the more luxury condominiums are on the shores of Lake Michigan overlooking the lake and conveniently located across from shopping at Plaza del Lago in Wilmette. Most of the area is single-family residential so there are not a huge number of condominium or townhouse options in New Trier Township.
