Kenilworth is nestled between Wilmette and Winnetka on the shores of Lake Michigan, approximately 14 miles north of Chicago. Kenilworth is the smallest of the five New Trier "feeder suburbs" with an area of only .6 square miles. The quality of architecture is fairly consistent throughout this tiny community of approximately 2,494 residents. The train station is walking distance from just about every house. The average train time to downtown Chicago is 32-37 minutes.
Kenilworth was founded by Joseph Sears when he bought the land between Wilmette and Winnetka in 1889. He planned the village including, laying pipes for water and gas, paving the streets, and planting trees. There was careful consideration regarding zoning issues such as lot size, quality of construction, and homogeneous architecture. The Village was officially incorporated in 1896.
Kenilworth has many grand, gracious houses of a bygone era that have been beautifully preserved and updated. At the time Kenilworth was being developed, many influential architects were involved including, Daniel Burnham and George Maher, a contemporary of Frank Lloyd Wright. Consequently, there are many houses with a strong Arts and Crafts and Prairie influence, in addition to the many wonderful colonial, Georgian, Tudor, and Victorian houses. Jens Jensen was the landscape architect for many of the parks and houses in early Kenilworth.

Schools
Kenilworth is served by Joseph Sears School for grades K-8. Like other area grade schools, Sears School's reputation precedes itself.
For high school, all students in New Trier Township are able to attend New Trier High School (District 203). New Trier is divided into two campuses. The West Campus, located in Northfield, is home to all freshman students. This is a wonderful arrangement, as it is the first time students from all six junior high schools come together. The freshman campus provides a great opportunity for a large class of 1000 students to get to know each other without the influence of the older grades. The East Campus is the original campus established in 1901. The East Campus, located in Winnetka, accommodates sophomores, juniors, and seniors. New Trier is known for its academic excellence in addition to its award winning fine arts program and excellent athletic programs.
